Opera Nations

Many Opera employees (Brian, Magnus, Henrik B and Charles to name a few) have created maps showing which countries they have visited.
Because everyone and their dog has created a map by now, I wanted to do something different. Thus, I created a map of all countries which represent an Opera employee nationality. There are 35 in total, and that is quite impressive considering the fact that Opera is a Norwegian company with less than 300 employees.

Without further ado: The Opera Nations.

(Oh, and if you really want to, you can check out my map. Spectacular, innit?)

Opera 9: Code Name “Merlin”

Yes, we’ve been busy at Opera; two releases in one day! This one is a technical preview (alpha quality) of Opera 9, which has been dubbed “Merlin” internally. This release really is a milestone in terms of Opera releases, as it includes a new version of the rendering engine.

We’ve been working on Merlin for quite some time now, and it is great to finally be able to show the world where we are headed. This technical preview is a baby step towards the final release, but will still make many web developers happy with its many bug fixes and likewise users for its new features. Just look at the changelog!

As you probably have figured out by now, it’s rough around the edges in this early stage. Nevertheless, it is my pleasure–nay–privilege to say: welcome aboard.

Flex Your Mini-muscle!

Opera Mini was today officially made available in all of the Nordic countries (press release). It was originally only available in Norway, but now our Scandinavian neighbours can enjoy it as well. It’s just a matter of time before it is available world-wide.

While it is still in beta, it is highly stable and usable. If you live in one of the listed countries, I suggest you give it a spin!

Apple Matters Praises Opera

Apple Matters has some nice things to say about Opera. It’s always great to hear praise for software that you bust your ass off working on, especially when it comes from people who share your love for to the Mac platform.

The author also mentions how Opera gets a higher rating than Firefox on VersionTracker, which to me doesn’t come as a big surprise. I try not to be too biased, but Firefox on Mac is downright horrible. I don’t understand why the resources spent on developing Firefox for Mac weren’t put into Camino in stead.

But I digress. Kudos to the author on the article and a warm welcome to the Opera world. I sure hope he checks out the MyOpera community, which is one of the reasons why Opera is so great.

Opera. Free.

The browser we all love has gone free. That’s right. The banners are gone. Go get it now. Oh, and check out the frontpage of Opera.com today. So simple. So beautiful.

Home and Away

Today it is exactly one year ago that I started working for Opera Software. This also means that I’ve been living in Oslo, Norway for a year now. Wow. Time really does fly by when you’re having fun!

The last year has given me so much. A new job, new challenges, new colleagues and new friends; a new perspective of life. I truly hope that the people of Opera understand how much I appreciate them, and how grateful I am for this oppurtunity.
