Strange Stuff in google.com whois
February 23rd, 2006
The other day, I opened a terminal and executed “whois google.com”. I don’t know why, because the result should be obvious. Far from it.
Excerpt:
GOOGLE.COM.VN
(Complete output)
GOOGLE.COM.UA
GOOGLE.COM.SUCKS.FIND.CRACKZ.WITH.SEARCH.GULLI.COM
GOOGLE.COM.MX
GOOGLE.COM.IS.NOT.HOSTED.BY.ACTIVEDOMAINDNS.NET
GOOGLE.COM.IS.APPROVED.BY.NUMEA.COM
GOOGLE.COM.HAS.LESS.FREE.PORN.IN.ITS.SEARCH.ENGINE.THAN.SECZY.COM
GOOGLE.COM.BR
GOOGLE.COM.AU
GOOGLE.COM
If you know the explanation for this, please leave a comment. I’m totally blank.

Hey, I sit right next to you at work and used to work as a hostmaster, why don’t you just ask me?
If I created the subdomain joen.com.is.hosted.by.countzero.no it would also most likely show up in your lookup of joen.com. That doesn’t mean this subdomain has anything to do with joen.com, it is simply because of the way your whois client works.
May I recommend jwhois (Debian package used to be maintained by our very own Peter Karlsson) as a more sensible whois alternative.
You’re not the first person to blog this - try doing a whois on microsoft.com =)

I find it quite remarkable that this is allowed. As Jesper mentioned during lunch, it shouldn’t be possible to whois subdomains.
